Behind the Cover With Photographer Julia Sariy
New York-based photograher and frequent ROSE & IVY contributor Julia Sariy talks about her process, what inspires her, and being behind the lens to photograph Carrie Coon.
How did you get into photography?
I got into photography later in life, after graduating from Economic University. At that moment, I never thought my life would be connected with any creative fields. My interest was sparked when I received some professional photos of myself that didn't really look like me. That experience made me curious about what makes a good picture, so I started analyzing the components: lighting, composition, mood, emotions, wardrobe, and the purpose of the photo. To figure it all out, I began taking pictures, experimenting with these elements, and that’s how my journey into photography began.
How would you describe your aesthetic?
My photography aesthetic is subject-driven, focusing on natural or soft strobe light with muted tones. I aim for an effortless yet intentional blend of fashion and portraiture, emphasizing elegance and subtle emotion with clean and minimalist compositions that allow the subjects and their surroundings to speak for themselves.
What is your preference, film or digital?
I’m more into film photography because it has this cinematic feel and gives the photos more depth. Plus, I love the whole experience of shooting on film—it makes you really focus on the moment instead of instantly checking how the shot turned out. The colors are more realistic and just incredible!
What is your advice to someone who is interested in honing their craft?
Keep shooting and let your style evolve naturally. It’s also crucial to find like-minded people with whom you can grow together.
What was your favorite part about the shoot with Carrie Coon?
My favorite part of shooting with Carrie was the incredible positive energy she brought to the set—she’s such a charismatic person! I loved capturing her in those special moments when everything aligned. The whole team was collaborative and supportive, which made the experience even better. The styling was spot on, and the entire shoot felt effortless and fun.
