Escape to the Catskills at Wylder Windham

The Catskill region, located just about 90 miles north of New York, has long been a haven for city dwellers to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature. Now there is another reason to book a trip to the region—for this summer and beyond—with the opening of Wylder Windham, a charming new hotel, which has been coined ‘The Gem of the Catskills’.

While the design is fresh and bespoke, the destination is tethered to the region’s past since it’s situated in the former Thompson House Resort, which had operated since 1880. The carefully restored and renovated seven-building property sprawls over 20 acres and includes lodges, inns, manors, and cottages, all nestled under the base of Windham Mountain. Booking a stay is more like a fun, adult camp where guests—and their pups—can play pickleball to their heart’s content, idle in hammocks, go tubing down the adjacent Batavia Kill Creek, enjoy time in a wood-fired sauna, lounge by the heated pool, take a spin on an electric bike, roam the Wyndham Path, or head to the mountain during ski season. There are additional off-site activities where guests will be complimentarily transported in a restored vintage green Land Rover Defender.

Each room or suite is unique and bedecked with custom furniture, think burnt orange headboards, while wide-planked oak flooring lends a nostalgic, rustic nod. The spacious bathrooms are clad in marble and stocked with amenities from Bamford, and most are outfitted with balconies dressed with Adirondack chairs. For dining visit Babblers Café, an all-day spot that serves coffee, pastries, and treats like soft serve ice cream; Babblers (which will open soon) will serve a menu of honest comfort food alongside a robust drink menu.
