A Few Minutes With Ruby O. Fee

Ruby was virtually photographed and interviewed in Los Angeles by Alison Engstrom

Hi Ruby, it’s lovely to meet you! You have such a diverse background, you were born in Costa Rica and lived in Brazil and now Germany. How did your upbringing influence the way you see the world?

What I’ve learned from living in so many different countries is to stay curious about everything going on around me. I’m always open to learning new things and seeing new cultures.

Did you always envision a career in performing or did you entertain other possibilities?

I love making movies.  I started acting when I was 12 years old, not necessarily because I wanted to be an actress but because I wanted to make movies and that is the only way when you are that age.  I’m also interested in directing and producing.  I just opened my own production company, and it is something I’m working really hard on.

Was there a film, TV series, or event that inspired you to pursue it on a serious level?

Honestly, no! What intrigued me about acting was it allows you to travel through the plot and your character to places you could never go in real life like the 1920s or space. Anything is possible in the world of movies and that really inspired me.

You’ve played a part in many projects including roles in German series. Is there one particular instance that shifted things for you and moved things forward?

Not one thing in particular but the nature of being at the mercy of auditions and call backs has been a challenge.  It has inspired me to start my own production company and write my own scripts to create the characters that I want to see.  I love auditioning but I want to take things into my own hands.

Congratulations on your role in the Netflix’s ‘Army of Thieves’! What excited you most about the script and your character Karina?

I was very excited that it was full of action, thrills, and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. I was also so excited to be a part of the Zach Snyder world and directed by Mattias Schweighöfer.  With the role itself, I was excited to showcase something I had never really done before.

Can you share a bit more about the plot for those who haven’t tuned in just yet?

I don’t want to spoil anything! I will say that it is an amazing heist film with a very sweet love story and all of the acting is incredible.  It’s really beautiful and such a fun watch for the whole family.

Outside of acting, you are also a painter.  How does that feed into your creativity as a performer and how do you get inspired in the painting space?

Painting for me is like meditation.  It calms my mind and brings me so much joy.  Being able pick out each color, mix them up, and create something makes me so happy.  I do it to clear my mind and stay inspired.

You are also working on writing scripts, that’s incredible! Can you share a bit more about any of them?

I’m working on a comedy currently.  It’s very strongly female led, which I’m really focused on, because I feel like there aren’t a lot of roles out there for women that are deep but still funny.  Most of the things I’m working on have big female leads because it’s what I’m passionate about.

At ROSE & IVY, conversations about manifesting the life you want is something I like to talk about. Looking out in the years to come, is there something you want to happen that you would like to put out there into the world?

I’m manifesting in all areas of my career, for my company to flourish and to have many great auditions.  I’d love to be in an action or horror movie and I’m dying to do a great indie movie.
