The Garden Oasis of Hollister House and Garden
Photography & Words by Alison Engstrom
Tucked away in the bucolic hills of Washington, Connecticut in Litchfield County, Hollister House and Garden is a verdant manicured landscape that was first conceived in 1979 by collector George Schoellkopf. Fashioned after storied English gardens like Sissinghurst, Hidcote, and Great Dixter, it sprawls over 25 acres and is marked with flourishing boarders that change with the season—you’ll find blousy peonies in June and dahlias in the late summer—a sunken garden, intimate rooms enclosed with expertly trimmed boxwoods, and an herb garden. Hollister House, which sits in the middle of the property peers out onto a rolling hill with the gardens below.
