A Visit to Sobre Masa, New York's First Tortilleria

If anyone needs an extra excuse to enjoy a taco—and a delicious one at that—a visit to Sobre Masa is a must. Opened last year in Bushwick, by Oaxacan husband and wife team Zack and Diana Wangeman, who had the goal of bringing authentic flavors of the region to the forefront, in what is now the city’s first-ever tortilleria. Each day the team churns out thousands of freshly made tortillas that are spun from twelve different heirloom corn varieties, all of which have been responsibly sourced from Mexican farmers. Visitors can even get a glimpse of the well-oiled operation in action by peering through the large glass windows and seeing the transformation of the golden masa dough into a pressed tortilla. The edited menu that’s served in the dining room under a lively kite installation by artist Francesco Toldeo, features three different types of tacos—Al Pastor are the favorite—specialties like costra, gringas, and alambre alongside an inventive cocktail selection, and be sure to start with the guacamole. If you happen to be in the area earlier in the day, treat yourself to a coffee made with Oaxacan beans, a variety of Mexican pastries, or a coveted sweet tamale.
