Escape to Iceland | Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

While traveling in Iceland I wanted to see the sites that were not always in the boldest of biggest type in the guide book like Fjaðrárgljúfur. It is the a sharply carved canyon that stretches for over a mile. While driving along the Ring Road in southern Iceland, I saw a small sign for Fjaðrárgljúfur and after reading about it we took a turn and made our way up the small country road. If you read the story, 'Untouched Beauty' in the latest issue of the Journal you know that the weather in Iceland can change in an instant. What was a sunny morning turned in to a full-blown snowstorm. The road was dirt and became quite icy, but we decided to trek on anyways. We made it to the base and it stopped snowing. We trekked up the side of a mountains (one that was very icy and slippery) to peer over the canyon's edge.

Monica, my trustee traveling companion and R&I designer decided to play it safe and head back down to the base. I decided to live a little bit on the edge, no pun intended, because it was just me on the ledge of this canyon with birds circling overhead. It was one of the most peaceful moments on my journey. Moss covered rocks became illuminated by the sun and you could hear the river washing though the rocks way more than 300 feet down below.
