Winter Breakfast | Orange Scented Scones

ROSE & IVY Journal Winter Breakfast Orange Scented Scones

I love scones, but only when they have a soft interior.  This recipe for Orange Scented Scones are incredibly soft and airy, they almost take on a biscuit consistency.  Right now, I am absolutely loving citrus season - oranges, clemntines, satsumas, kumquats, just amazing and needed this time of year.  They are wonderful when served on a cold day with a nice cup of coffee.

ORANGE SCENTED SCONES

3 1/2 cups flour

3/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

zest and juice of one orange (Navel or Cara Cara)

1 stick unsalted butter, cubed and chilled

1 cup whole milk

2 eggs, divided

Turbinado sugar for sanding

Directions:  Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside.  Place flour, sugar, salt and orange zest in a bowl. Whisk to combine. Using a pastry cutter or hands add the cubed butter and cut into dough is a bit shaggy.  Add egg and milk and stir to combine.  Flour a working surface and turn dough onto it.  Shape it into a circle about 2 inches thick.  Cut into eight wedges.  Lay pieces on baking sheet. Brush with remaining egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.  Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
